Indiana is the 19th admitted to the Union. It is located in the Great Lakes region, and with approximately 6.3 million residents.

Indiana is ranked 38th in land area, and is the smallest state in the continental US west of the Appalachian Mountains.

The capital and largest city is Indianapolis, the largest of any state capital east of the Mississippi River.

There are approxomately 6,376,792 people residing in Indiana. The population density is 169.5 persons per square mile.

The racial makeup of the state is 88.0% White, 9.1% African American, 1.4% Asian, 1.2% from a biracial or multiracial background and 0.3% Native American.

The median age is 36.4 years.[55] In 2005, 77.7% of Indiana residents lived in metropolitan counties, 16.5% lived in micropolitan counties and 5.9% lived in non-core counties.
